Panic, chaos surround shooting at Chiefs' Super Bowl parade

A shooting near Kansas City’s Union Station on Wednesday left one person dead and at least 21 others with gunshot wounds, turning a Super Bowl victory celebration into a scene of chaos as thousands of fans in red jerseys ran for safety.

It was unclear who was responsible. Three people had been detained, the Kansas City police chief said at a news conference. She did not name them and said investigators had not identified a motive. The chief asked the public to provide any video or other information that could help authorities determine what had happened.

Here’s what else to know:

— Chief Stacey Graves of the Kansas City Police Department said one person was dead, and that investigators were still working to determine exactly how many people had been injured. At least two of the people in custody had been armed, police said, and a third person had also been detained, the chief said.

— Twelve people were taken to University Health, formerly Truman Medical Center, said Keith King, a hospital spokesperson. Eight of them were being treated for gunshot wounds, he said, including two in critical condition. One victim with a gunshot wound was in critical condition at Saint Luke’s Hospital, said Laurel Gifford, a spokesperson for that hospital. Three other people walked in with injuries.

— Children’s Mercy is treating 12 patients who attended the rally, said Lisa Augustine, a hospital spokesperson. Of those 12 patients, 11 are children. Nine of the injured have gunshot wounds, Augustine said.

— The celebration of the Chiefs’ victory ended with a rally in front of Union Station, an Amtrak hub and tourist spot in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. “As soon as the rally concluded, there were shots fired on the west side of Union Station,” Graves said, adding, “I know one of the suspects was immediately pursued on foot.”

— Many state and local officials were at the rally, including the governors of Kansas and Missouri. Gov. Laura Kelly of Kansas had to be evacuated and posted on social media that she is now “out of harm’s way,” and Gov. Mike Parson of Missouri and his wife were both “safe and secure,” the governor’s office said.

— Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City quarterback who led his team to victory Sunday, said that he was “praying for Kansas City” on social media.

— Gun violence has been falling in some parts of the country, but Kansas City saw a record number of homicides in 2023. There were 183 murders last year, more than the previous record of 179 in 2020.
