Roanoke Rapids Police Department arrested and charged a man Thursday afternoon regarding a July homicide.

Detective S. Bryant charged Oquevion Raheim Barnes, 20, with Jeremy Lemuel Motley's death.

On July 3, Police responded to a homicide at the 2nd Street and Jackson Street intersection near the Food Lion in Roanoke Rapids around 9:00 p.m.

Upon arrival, they discovered Motley, 26, lying in the 2nd Street and Madison Street roadway. Motley had suffered a traumatic gunshot injury that resulted in his death.

Barnes has been identified as the suspect and officially charged with First Degree Murder.

Barnes was placed under no bond and his first appearance court date is scheduled for August 18 in Halifax County.

He also has pending charges for a December 2022 Resisting Arrest charge and a July 2022 Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana charge from 2022.

Barnes was previously convicted of Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling in February 2021 and Simple Assault in October 2021.
