Review: Crystal Ball Frappucino is fun, but not worth the calories

Crystal Ball Frappucino

I jumped on Starbucks' latest bandwagon and tried the limited-time Crystal Ball Frappucinno.

The blended drink, which premiered Thursday, will only be around for five days. If you want to try it, I'd recommend visiting Starbucks over the weekend.

But would I recommend the drink itself? In my opinion, it was good, but not great.

Similar to the pastel-colored Unicorn Frappucino, which Starbucks introduced in April 2017, the Crystal Ball is a dessert-like beverage that is made with a crème-base and topped with whipped cream. A Grande with whole milk and whipped cream is about 380 calories and includes 55 grams of sugar.

People who are familiar with the Starbucks menu can compare the Crystal Ball to the Vanilla Bean Crème Frappucino -- it's a very similar texture and taste. The difference, though, is that the Crystal Ball has a mild peach flavor and is topped with whipped cream and blue, green or purple rock candy crystals.

According to Starbucks, blue stands for adventure, green stands for luck and purple will bring "magic, wonder and enchantment."

While the concept is fun, in my opinion, the Crystal Ball can't compare to the Unicorn. The Crystal Ball was sweet and peachy, but the flavor was very mild and somewhat bland, making me wonder if it was worth all the sugar. I found The Unicorn, which had a mango crème base and a sour drizzle running through it, much more flavorful colorful and, let's face it, fun to photograph.

So, if you love sweet drinks and enjoy trying new things, I'd go for it -- just don't set your expectations too high.
