Reassignment: Morrisville parents frustrated at switch to year-round school

On Tuesday, Wake County parents will get a chance to see revised student re-assignment plans.

A new school is being built in Morrisville, and some parents are already worried they will be affected.

Fences currently surround the future Parkside Elementary School as crews work to finish construction. Many parents seemed happy about the new school until reassignment plans were released.

Wake County is proposing to open Parkside as a year-round calendar school, but parents were expecting it to be on a traditional calendar school like the school from which their children are being moved. The proposal gives students a traditional elementary option in Raleigh, but many parents are frustrated that alternate school is 23 miles away.

"We already bus our kids quite far for middle school, and so we know how that works," said Anne Robotti, a concerned parent. "The disruption to family life, the disruption to our jobs."

The school system is also trying to fill three other new schools -- two in Cary and one in Raleigh. The third draft, which will be released Tuesday, could be the last version.

Parents can bring concerns about student reassignment to the school board meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 7. A final vote is scheduled for Nov. 20.
