RDU travelers deal with delays related to plane crash

Travelers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) dealt with dozens of delays on Wednesday after a small plane crashed near a runway.

Several in Terminal 2 were just learning about the delays on Wednesday afternoon as they arrived. At one point, there were more than 70 flights delayed at RDU.

Several flights were diverted to Greensboro. The flight that crashed was coming from Wilmington. The NC State Track & Field team was headed to Philadelphia for an event and had their flight delayed.

People boarding flights on Wednesday were surprised at the news.

"She texted and told me there was a plane crash at RDU and I was like, 'oh my God, that's horrible,'" said Madelyn Jadic, an NC State student heading to Peru for a wedding. "I didn't even think about it affecting my flight. I was worried about if people were hurt."

A UNC Health physician and a pilot were taken to the hospital. The physician, Dr. Paul Chelminski, is said to be in good condition at UNC Hospitals. The pilot was taken to Duke University Hospital.

WRAL reporter Carly Haynes was on a flight coming from Richmond into RDU and a pilot informed passengers that several planes were waiting to land.
