A skunk in Orange County has tested positive for rabies, according to the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health.

On Tuesday, a Rougemont resident discovered a skunk behaving strangely in an area with her dogs and livestock. Animal Control was able to remove the skunk and test it for rabies.

The woman and her animals had some exposure to the skunk. The dogs were up to date on their rabies vaccinations. If needed, livestock on the property will be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is encouraging pet owners to update their pets' rabies vaccinations.

OCAS will host a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic on Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. until noon at their Animal Services Center on 1601 Eubanks Rd. in Chapel Hill.
