The SPCA of Wake County is urging pet owners to bring their animals inside during fireworks this July 4.

According to the SPCA, more pets get lost on July 4 than any other day of the year because they can get spooked by loud noises from fireworks and other celebrations.

"Like clockwork, July 5 is one of the busiest days for animal shelters due to the sudden influx of pets who escaped the day before," according to the SPCA. "The booming fireworks can be incredibly frightening for pets, causing many to panic or experience severe anxiety. Even pets who would not usually try to escape may run away and become lost or injured."

The best way to keep pets safe is to keep them indoors during July 4 festivities. Never bring your pets to a fireworks show.

The SPCA offers other ways to keep pets safe:

  • Be aware fireworks may go off in the days and evenings leading up to July 4
  • Ensure your pet is wearing an ID tag, and check that your pet’s microchip is up-to-date with your correct address and phone number so you can be reunited quickly should they get loose.
  • If your pet suffers from anxiety, consult your veterinarian about medications to minimize stress during the holiday festivities.
  • Turn on the radio, television, or music to block out some firework noise.
  • Give your pet a tasty treat, like a frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter, to keep their mind occupied and distracted from the sounds.
  • If you are having guests over, keep your pets in a secure location, and make sure guests know to keep doors closed to prevent escape.
  • Keep pets inside if at all possible. Even if you think your yard is secure, frightened pets often find ways to escape secure places, and a tied-up dog may injure itself trying to get away.
  • If your dog or cat is especially noise-sensitive, consider having someone stay home with them.
  • Walk dogs before the fireworks start. Tiring out your dog with a nice long walk or game of fetch can help them relax and stay calm through the noise.
  • If your cat or dog does get lost, file a lost report with Animal Services immediately.
