Murdaugh family dominated small SC county for generations

Authorities have filed new charges against a prominent South Carolina lawyer and his former client. Both are already facing a slew of criminal charges for financial crimes and a failed suicide-for-hire scheme.

Curtis Edward Smith appeared in court for a bond hearing in Columbia, South Carolina, on Tuesday.

The state's attorney general said a grand jury indicted Smith on several charges, including money laundering, forgery and trafficking methamphetamine.

Smith was indicted along with his former lawyer, Alex Murdaugh.

Murdaugh faces two new conspiracy counts, including a narcotics count related to oxycodone. Earlier this year, Murdaugh confessed to police that he had Smith shoot him in the head as part of a life insurance fraud scheme last year.

The shooting happened after Murdaugh's wife and one of his sons were killed in a shooting near their home.

Murdaugh denies any involvement in those killings.
