Deliveries being made despite snow, ice

Jack, the North Hills neighborhood postal worker, drops off some deliveries, bundled up to keep warm from the brutal temperatures.

He was one of thousands of United States Postal Service delivery workers out during the winter weather warning.

"With winter weather coming, we always have preparations that are going into place," said Philip Bogenberger, a communications specialist with USPS. "We're talking to our carriers about the attire that they need to wear from weatherproof boots and dressing in layers."

Bogenberger says safety is their top priority. That means safety for workers delivering and picking up mail, and there are some ways people at home can help.

How you can help the mailman deliver

The postal service asks that customers take steps to make it safe for mail to be delivered, even in winter weather.

  • Clear a pathway to your front door
  • Add some ice melt or salt to walkways and steps to make sure they are not slick.
  • If you have a drive-up mailbox, shovel out six feet so your driver can drop off your mail without getting out.

"Because our vehicles do make frequent stops to give them extra space, especially if there's going to be ice or snow on the roads," Bogenberger said. "We expect that we'll be making deliveries uninterrupted tomorrow."
