Many in Raleigh are mourning the death of one of the city's most popular bartenders and well-known characters.

Robert McMillan, better known as 'Bert' to most, died on Oct. 9 at 69.

McMillan developed lasting friendships and earned many a tip in his 21-year tenure at Players' Retreat on Oberlin Road. He was inducted into the PR Hall of Fame for his rapport with customers. McMillan also had a passion for music and played in many Raleigh-area bands.

McMillan was born in Southern Pines, went to high school in Pottstown, Pa. and graduated from NC State with a Philosophy degree in 1978.

McMillan worked at several other Raleigh establishments such as Mitch's Tavern, the Bear's Den, the Flying Burrito, The Pier and Sadlacks.

A celebration of life is expected at a later date.
