A registered sex offender was recently charged after Raleigh police found him babysitting a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old, according to an arrest warrant.

Kevin Lealond Atkins, 28, of 1331 Park Glen Drive, was charged last week with two felony counts of sex offender employment violation. He remains in the Wake County jail under a $200,000 bond.

Atkins was found with providing "instruction, supervision or care" to the two children at a motel on Capital Boulevard on Jan. 24, a warrant states.

He has been on the state sex offender registry since being released from prison last May. He was convicted in 2016 of 12 counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to state records.

Police said the children's parents didn't know Atkins was on the offender registry.

Wake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Curry said deputies had checked on Atkins three times since his release, and he had always been in compliance with state rules for sex offenders.
