Clues sought in north Raleigh death investigation

Police were searching for clues after the body of a man was found late Saturday in north Raleigh.

Authorities said Derrick Malik Wiley, 21, was found when police were called to investigate a report of gunfire in the 4200 block of Waterbury Road, off New Hope Church Road just west of Capital Boulevard, shortly before 10:30 p.m.

People in the area said they heard two loud noises, but some thought the sound was from a car backfiring. At least 12 police officers were called to the scene to investigate the incident along with a police K9.

Residents said the area is home to young families and senior citizens, but traffic seems to be bringing issues to the area.

"It just keeps getting worse and worse in this neighborhood," said Dustin Beadle, who heard the loud noise Saturday night. "We don't need any of that around here."

Police have not said if a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident or publicly provided a motive for the killing. Police also have not said how Wiley died.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Raleigh police at 919-834-4357.
