Caught on cam: Employees duck during shooting outside Subway

The Durham Police Department is investigating a New Year's Day drive-by shooting that left five people injured.

Police said Sunday around 2 p.m., officers responded to a call of "multiple" people shot at 1000 North Miami Boulevard.

When officers arrived, police said they found four adults and one young person had been shot outside a Subway restaurant, located inside a strip mall.

One of the adults and the young person suffered what police said are life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The three other adults were left with non-life threatening injuries.

All five victims are said to be in "stable" condition.

The owner of the Subway restaurant on North Miami Boulevard, Sam Elahi, told WRAL News there are 11 bullet holes in the glass.

One bullet pierced the soda machine through a window.

The restaurant flooded, and employees were mopping up blood mixed with the water.

Elahi has owned the Subway location since 2008. He said the violence has been non-stop for the last two years.

"Out of control. The gang guys, the young kids. They take over all of this shopping center," said Elahi. "Unfortunately, we are not feeling safe in here, we are losing business. And I don't know what I can do with the business, with my employees. Every month we're losing employees, and it's hard to get the employees."

Elahi said he and his employees don't feel safe walking into their store anymore. That's a feeling echoed by other people who spoke with WRAL News while waiting at the bus stop nearby.
