Paschal wins 3A golf title on fourth playoff hole as Terry Sanford wins team championship

The drama was palpable at the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A boys golf state championship.

Fred T. Foard freshman David Gee entered Tuesday's round with a three-stroke lead over the field, but a two-over par 74 in the second round left him at 140 (-4) for the tournament.

Boys Golf: 2023 NCHSAA 3A State Championship

That allowed two juniors to catch up — Jacksonville's Tyler Jones and Terry Sanford's Ethan Paschal. Jones shot a one-under par 71 on Tuesday and Paschal shaved two shots of his first round score to post a three-under par 69.

Gee, Jones, and Paschal finished in a three-way tie for first place at 140 (-4) in 36 holes. Then it took Paschal four playoff holes to finally break the tie.

Crest junior Reed Burton and Fike junior Ethan Boyette finished tied for fourth place. Both golfers posted 36-hole scores of 146 (+2).

Paschal held lead Terry Sanford to the team championship with a comfortable margin. The Bulldogs finished +22 for the tournament, well ahead of second place Stuart Cramer, which was +53.

The +4 performance from Paschal led the way for Terry Sanford, but Thomas Horne was +4, while Charlie Horne and Parks Helms were both +11.

Rich Wills was the top golfer for Stuart Cramer. He finished +7 in the first round on Monday, but was one-under par on Tuesday.

Fred T. Foard's team finished third at +64, Oak Grove was fourth at +65, and East Rowan finished fifth at +73.
