Part of Interstate 540 reopened after a possible hazmat situation on Tuesday.

The interstate was shut down between Creedmoor and Leesville roads.

Raleigh police said law enforcement was called about a 5-gallon bucket with some type of substance in it that was smoking on the side of the road.

The substance turned out to be muriatic acid, according to police, which is a diluted solution of hydrochloric acid that can be bought at home improvement stores.

The road was expected to be closed until 12:30 a.m.
