Hillsborough Street closed for 2 weeks as crews work to relocate water line

Part of Hillsborough Street will be closed for the next two weeks as part of an ongoing project.

If Hillsborough Street is a part of your morning commute, you may run into some traffic due to this road closure.

Crews will be working on this part of Hillsborough Street near the fairgrounds for the next two weeks.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said this current closure is happening due to a water line relocation.

"The water line has to be relocated, so that we can progress construction for Blue Ridge Road in the future," said NCDOT Engineer Cody Winkler. "So we’re performing this work now ahead so we don’t have any issues in the future."

In March 2023, Sky 5 flew over the Hillsborough Street to get a look at the project.

The construction at Hillsborough and Blue Ridge Road is taking longer than expected. The NCDOT expected to finish the project in 2024, but the new completion date is set for mid-2025.

When the project is finished, Blue Ridge will pass beneath Hillsborough Street, the railroad tracks and Beryl Road. A new street will connect Hillsborough and Blue Ridge.

Here is a list of alternate roads you can take to avoid traffic:

  • Trinity Road
  • Youth Center Drive
  • Edwards Mill Road
  • Wade Avenue
  • Western Boulevard

This section of Hillsborough Street is scheduled to reopen March 2.
