One primary down, one to go

North Carolina voters may have just finished voting in the March 15 primary, but a new primary season begins Wednesday for U.S. House and state Supreme Court races.

Candidates running for either set of offices can file for the races at the a board of elections office from noon through Friday, March 25, at noon.

Both set of races will be part of a special June 7 primary election due to court action.

In the case of the U.S. House races, a federal court found the state's 13 congressional districts were unconstitutionally drawn based on race. Lawmakers put new districts in place for the June election.

With regard to the state Supreme Court, lawmakers changed that race to be a retention election, in which voters would decide only whether to keep or reject a current judge. However, a state Superior Court found that such a retention election violates the state constitution. If more than two candidates file to run for that office, they will compete in a June primary to narrow the field to two candidates, who will face off in November.
