More than 100 young swimmers were surprised Saturday morning at the Pullen Park Aquatic Center when Olympic medalist Kieran Smith visited.

The Marlins of Raleigh swim team's students were treated to a special lesson from Smith, a bronze medalist in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the current

American record holder in the 500-yard freestyle.

"I like to share whatever wisdom and knowledge that I've acquired through my 17 years of swimming and pass it on to a younger generation," Kieran Smith, Olympic medalist, said.

Smith shared his knowledge and experience with the enthusiastic young athletes, offering advice on everything from stroke technique to staying motivated.

"I'd just say listen to your parents, to your coaches, stay disciplined when things get rough, and set realistic goals," Smith said.

"This is probably the only chance I'll have of meeting someone who inspires people," John Lee said.

This clinic is a dream come true for swimmers like John Lee and Lainey Buddington.

"Happy. Excited and surprised," Buddington said.

For Smith, this brings back memories of meeting Olympians during swim clinics when he was a child.

"I think I learned a lot from that, and it's really cool to be in their shoes now, doing the same thing," Smith said.

Those who are learning are ready to take those lessons to the Olympics of tomorrow.

"It's one of my dreams," Buddington said. "And I really want to be able to be able to have a record, a world record, in swimming."

Smith's Olympic journey isn't over either.

He'll be competing for his spot on the American Olympic Team in Indianapolis in June.

Over 100 Marlins Of Raleigh Swimmers participated in the clinic, with each being rewarded for raising over $100 in MOR’s annual Swim-A-Thon fundraiser held in February.

Hudson DeGroote, one of the Marlins of Raleigh and a senior at South Garner High School, will also compete at the 2024 US Olympic Trials along with other Marlin alums Justin Ress and Abby Arens.

“We are thankful Speedo’s sponsorship of this clinic. Kieran is one of the top swimmers in the world and is a great role model for these young swimmers," said Marlins head coach Paul Silver. "We are sure his presence will inspire other swimmers to dream of going to the Olympics one day.”
