Family undaunted in search for barber's killer

A family marked a solemn annual ritual Friday outside The Line-Up Barbershop, at 6376 Yadkin Road in Fayetteville.

It marks the fourth time Vernice and Linda Johnson have spent Nov. 19 outside the shop, passing out fliers and asking for clues to the murder of their nephew.

Creg Johnson, 35, was shot to death inside the shop on Nov. 19, 2005, and his body was found the following morning. His keys were still in the barbershop door.

Police have no suspects in the case, and they haven't determined a motive for the shooting.

"We're gonna keep doing this as long as we have to," said Vernice Johnson.

"I think it's our responsibility to make sure it does not go unresolved, so not only can we get closure, but the community itself can get closure," he said.

Fayetteville police are still very much on the case, spokesman Dan Grubb said.

"We don't like to call them cold cases. We sort of look at them as unresolved cases," he said.

Johnson's family, Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crime Stoppers and the state have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information about Johnson's slaying is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477 or toll-free at 866-542-8477 or call Detective Chuck Dew of the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1879.
