Slain Barber's Family Seeks New Leads in Year-Old Unsolved Case
A year after a barber was found slain in his shop, his family and police on Monday searched once again for witnesses to help solve his murder.
A year after a barber was found slain in his shop, his family and police on Monday searched once again for witnesses to help solve his murder.
Creg Keith Johnson, 38, was shot to death on Nov. 19, 2005, and his body was found the following morning inside First Line Barber Shop at 6376 Yadkin Road, authorities said.
Johnson likely stayed past the shop's closing time to accommodate some customers, his family said. His keys were still in the barbershop door when his body was found.
Police have no suspects in the case, and they haven't determined a motive for the shooting.
"The investigation into Creg Johnson's murder is an open investigation. It's not a cold case by any means. We're still actively pursuing numerous leads," Detective Chuck Dew of the Fayetteville Police Department said.
Johnson's family and police canvassed the neighborhoods around the barbershop Monday, handing out fliers with his picture and information about the slaying in hopes of jogging someone's memory and producing new leads.
"Someone is staying with someone and possibly sleeping with somebody who killed someone," said Johnson's uncle, Vernice Thomas.
Thomas and his wife, Linda, drove to Fayetteville from Greensboro to commemorate the anniversary of Johnson's death and to help police with the investigation.
"Creg knew a lot of people. A lot of people knew Creg," he said. "We grieve for Creg. He has an 11-year-old son who doesn't understand why no one has been brought to justice."
Johnson's photo, a bouquet of flowers and a note from his son greeted customers to the Line Up Barbershop on Monday.
"He was always in a good mood, always upbeat," Fayetteville Police Sgt. Reginald Wesley said. "He enjoyed what he did. He's, like, the best barber in Fayetteville."
Merchants along Yadkin Road are eager for an arrest.
"I don't want to be the next guy that gets my first customer of the day come in and find me dead in the middle of the floor," Randall Hinds said.
