Carowinds amusement park is celebrating its 50th anniversary by opening a new section dedicated to the history and future of flight.

Aeronautica Landing, which includes new themed attractions, is now open.

The Terminal A restaurant and bar is designed after high-end and exclusive sky clubs. It offers guests indoor and outdoor patio dining and craft beer.

There are also new takes on traditional carnival games.

Four of the new rides are now open:

  • Air Racers - Race and roll in mini planes through the obstacles recreated from heroic tales of ace pilots high in the Carolina sky. (Minimum height to ride is 48 inches)
  • Gear Spin - This ride puts you inside a propulsion engine for speed and spins. (Minimum height to ride alone is 48 inches but you can ride with an adult if you are 42 inches tall)
  • Hover & Dodge - This is a futuristic take where bumper cars are transformed into hovercrafts. (Minimum height to ride alone is 48 inches but you can ride with an adult if you are 42 inches tall)
  • The Airwalker - Rows of riders twist and turn while flying high above the crowds in this ride. (Minimum height to ride alone is 48 inches but you can ride with an adult if you are 42 inches tall)

These rides will open in late spring:

  • Gyro Force - This rotating ride takes guests around in a circle at fast speeds. (Guests must be 42 inches tall to ride or accompanied by a supervising companion.) - Opening late spring
  • Windstar - This ride allows you to control the motion your own hang glider (Minimum height to ride alone is 48 inches but you can ride with an adult if you are 42 inches tall) - Opening late spring

This year, the theme park began year-round operations.

Carowinds opened in March 1973 and originally included the Carolina Skytower, Snoopy's Junction and Carolina Goldrusher -- which are all still in operation today.

Carowinds is the country's only amusement park that stretches across two states.
