Former president Donald Trump has a slight lead over President Joe Biden in North Carolina, while the gubernatorial race is neck-and-neck, according to a new poll released Friday.

The poll of 625 registered North Carolina voters, conducted last week by independent polling firm Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, shows Trump leading Biden by 6 points, 49% to 43%, with 8% undecided. The poll had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The presidential results are in line with other recent polls from WRAL News and Quinnipiac University.

The Mason-Dixon poll shows Biden’s support within his own party is relatively weak. Among Democrats, only 80% say they’ll support Biden. Eleven percent say they’ll vote for Trump, and 9% are undecided.

Republicans are much more unified behind their candidate, with 93% supporting Trump. Three percent say they’ll vote for Biden and 4% are undecided.

Among unaffiliated voters, Trump leads by 8% — a key figure in this battleground state. Unaffiliated voters make up the state’s biggest voting bloc, which can make elections difficult to predict in North Carolina.

Biden fares best in the Triangle, where he leads Trump by 18 points. Trump’s strongest support is in Western North Carolina, where he leads Biden by a margin of 30.

Trump leads among men by 18 points and voters over 50 by 10 points, while Biden leads among women and younger voters with slim margins that fall within the margin of error.

Gubernatorial results

The race for North Carolina governor remains tight, with Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein holding a 2-point lead over Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson.

Stein’s support is strongest in the two largest metro areas. He leads Robinson by 19 points in the Triangle and by 8 points in Charlotte, where he outperforms Biden by several points.

Robinson holds double-digit margins in rural eastern and western North Carolina, and also leads by a slim margin in the Triad, where he’s from.

White voters support Robinson 54% to 37%, while Black voters support Stein 81% to 15%.

Women voters favor Stein by a 12-point margin, while Robinson leads among men by 9 points.

The poll shows Stein performing better than Biden among his own party, with 89% support. Robinson garners 87% support among Republicans. He also leads among independents by 4 points.
