Other North Carolina nominees included J. Cole, a rapper raised in Fayetteville, and Sam Bean from Durham-based Iron and Wine.

Between the Buried and Me, a progressive metal band from Raleigh, was also nominated, along with Sister Sadie, a North Carolina bluegrass band.
