NC State's Poe Hall will remain closed through 2024

North Carolina State University's Poe Hall is expected to stay closed through at least the end of 2024, according to Chancellor Randy Woodson. He updated the university community on Tuesday, writing, "We also anticipate that the building will remain closed through at least the end of 2024."

A consulting firm is investigating potentially toxic chemicals found in the building. Cancer-causing chemicals called PCBs were found during testing in Poe Hall in October, and the building was evacuated in November. Spring 2024 classes scheduled for Poe Hall have been relocated.

In his letter to the campus community on Feb. 20, 2024, Woodson said the next phase of testing for PCBs will begin in early March.

Test results and analysis could take months to be made public.

As of Jan. 4, 2024, there were no plans to completely clear out the building. Porous materials like chairs with fabric, personal belongings and other items deemed non-essential cannot be removed according to the university.

"Environmental testing and a building systems review are underway in Poe Hall," Warwick Arden, executive vice chancellor and provost, and Charles Maimone, executive vice chancellor for Finance and Administration, wrote in a letter to the campus community.
