A murder suspect who tampered with his electronic monitoring device in North Carolina and is also facing charges of attempted murder in Virginia has been arrested.

Shelvy Travon Edwards, 27, was arrested by agents with the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force on Tuesday after receiving a tip of his location.

Edwards attempted to run but was later caught and taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Two stolen guns, an AR-15 rifle and a handgun, both stolen out of Virginia, were located.

Another person, Zatez Perry of Roanoke Rapids, was arrested and charged with the incident.

Edwards was released from jail on an electronic monitoring device on August 4, but he somehow managed to remove it and escape. He has been on the run ever since.

Police said Edwards was last seen in the downtown area of Roanoke Rapids in Halifax County.

WRAL News spoke with several neighbors who expressed fear and concern.

"This just makes me want to go home now, put my groceries in the car and go home," said one resident. "It is scary because they could walk up in someone's backyard and they don't realize who it is."

Other residents wanted to know how a person with those charges was released from jail in the first place.

"Even your court system and your judges let this guy out and now he's out and about, you just don't know what he's going to do. It just makes you wonder how people get out so easily," said one resident.

According to state records, Edwards had a court date scheduled for October 9 of this year.

Edwards was arrested and charged:

  • Outstanding warrants out of Virginia.
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon.
  • Possession of a stolen firearm.

He was held without bond.

Perry was charged with three counts:

  • Outstanding order for arrest.
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon.
  • Possession of a stolen firearm.

He was held on a $135,000 bond.
