Multiple traffic accidents shut down I-540 Monday night
Two separate accidents closed all the internal lanes in both directions of I-540 Monday night.

Two traffic accidents shut down I-540 eastbound and westbound Monday night near Glenwood Avenue.
The accidents happened on I-540 near the Glenwood Avenue and Leesville Road exits in Raleigh.
According to the Raleigh Watch Commander, the first incident involved a driver going westbound towards the airport. The driver lost control and struck a median. Debris from that accident spread to other lanes.
The second accident occurred when a driver, traveling eastbound towards Wake Forest, rear ended an unoccupied Raleigh Police Department unit.
Drivers in both accidents sustained serious injuries.
Internal lanes in both directions were closed for several hours but reopened around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said an investigation is ongoing.
