Mother of man shot by Orange County deputy speaks out

A mother is speaking out Sunday night as her son remains in the hospital after being shot by an Orange County Sheriff's deputy.

Deputies say they attempted to serve a federal warrant to Derrick Williams, 21, at 5:58 p.m. on Friday in the 1300 block of Carolina Loop in Hillsborough. Williams fled the scene and brandished a firearm at another deputy.

Williams' mother said she was finally able to visit her son in the hospital for an hour, after he was shot and his lungs collapsed. He underwent surgery and is now on a ventilator.

"Hurt, not sleeping, hurting," Williams's mother said. "I've been hurting a lot."

She describes her pain knowing her son is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting.

"I thought I'd lose my kid. I don't want to plan services or a funeral; that's the hardest part, losing a son." Williams's mother said.

The Sheriff's Office said they were trying to serve a federal warrant when Williams started running armed with a gun.

The Sheriff's Office, who hasn't confirmed his name, said the man waved that gun at a deputy outside and the deputy then shot him.

"He was shot right here, outside of his neck, and the back, and his right leg he swelled up like a balloon, his whole body," Williams' mother said.

She says she hadn't seen him in three to four months and didn't know he was staying in Hillsborough.

Now she wants more answers and to see her son out of the hospital.

"I just want to know why they had to shoot him like that," Williams's mother said.

The Orange County Sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into what happened.

That's standard practice for officer-involved shootings.
