Students frustrated after high school loses their completed ACT tests

A Moore County high school lost more than 400 students’ ACT scores, officials said Tuesday.

Stefanie Phillips, Pinecrest High School’s principal, said tests that were administered to all juniors on Feb. 20 and March 13 were not submitted to the ACT for scoring.

Phillips said in a statement that the missing scores are because of “human error.”

“The district has taken swift and appropriate action to address the oversight as a confidential personnel matter,” she said.

“I deeply regret the situation and apologize to the entire rising senior class,” she said.

School officials said 440 students were affected.

The ACT is a standardized test used in college admissions. The University of North Carolina system schools accept applicants’ ACT scores and SAT scores.

It takes about 3 1/2 hours to complete.

Moore County Schools and the state Department of Public Instruction is working on a plan to readminister the test to all affected students when they return to school in the fall at no cost to students.

The school district is also examining security and protocols for giving non-state tests.
