Mediterranean Deli, a popular restaurant in Chapel Hill, reopened for takeout two months after a fire destroyed its original location.

The reopening has been a welcome relief for customers, and the Chapel Hill community has played a crucial role in helping the owner get takeout orders back up and running.

Mediterranean Deli owner Jamil Kadoura says the new, temporary deli kitchen is bustling with activity and delicious food.

He has resumed takeout orders on a limited menu.

"My friends and I have all been monitoring like when are they going to be opening again," Quintin Van Dyke, customer.

The big step comes two months after a fire destroyed the original location.

Kadoura gave WRAL a tour of the deli, which was heavily damaged by a fire. The charred floors, burnt walls, and plates still stacked in a corner were a sobering reminder of the devastation.

"I cry every time I come here," Kadoura said. "I come here many times at night by myself."

Chapel Hill's support has been essential to the deli's recovery. The town raised $140,000 in just two days, which helped to keep employees paid while a temporary space was opened.

"Honestly, it's overwhelming it's also making me feel uncomfortable, the support I've gotten it's amazing," Kadoura said.

Kadoura is already envisioning the rebuilt Mediterranean Deli at its original location.

"This is all going to be kitchen," Kadoura said.

He believes that the Mediterranean Deli is like a phoenix: it will rise again from the ashes of what it once was.

"There's always a gift in the darkness for you," Kadoura said.

He hopes the restaurant in its original location will open in about a year.

The temporary Mediterranean Deli is located just down the road from the original location and is open for takeout Monday through Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m.
