Marvin Ridge runs away with 4A boys swimming title; Ashley's Setzer sets two new records

Marvin Ridge finished the day with a comfortable 100-point advantage over second place as the Mavericks won their fourth boys swimming state title.

Marvin Ridge dominated the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys swimming & diving state championship at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Saturday.

The Mavericks outscored second-place Cardinal Gibbons by 100 points, posting 255 points in the competition.

Saturday's state championship marks the fourth boys swimming title in school history for Marvin Ridge, and the first at the 4A level. Marvin Ridge won three straight 3A state championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Marvin Ridge set two new state records en route to its team title, both in relay races.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Charles Heisig, Troy Keen, Gavin McCarter, and Michael Rice finished with a time of 1:23.25 to set a new state record. Then in the 200-yard medley relay, Jordan Willis subbed in for McCarter, and the team finished in a record 1:30.52, which broke the previous state record the same team set earlier in the day.

Heisig also won the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:47.88, beating Enloe's Ian Stutts by 0.13 seconds.

Marvin Ridge also had a second-place finish by Willis in the 100-yard breaststroke, which he finished in 54.67 seconds. Middle Creek's Grayson Nye won the event with a time of 53.88, which was a new 4A state record.

Cardinal Gibbons finished second in the team standings with 155 points. The Crusaders were led by a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Ardrey Kell (152), Leesville Road (135), and Enloe (122) rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Ashley senior Sean Setzer was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer at the 4A state championship. Setzer won two gold medals, setting new 4A state records in both events — the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.75 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 43.99.

The NCHSAA also awarded Sportsmanship Awards to two swimmers — Zach Richardson of Cardinal Gibbons and Gavin McCarter of Marvin Ridge.
