Durham police have charged a man who worked with an after-school program with multiple child sex crimes.

Oscar D. Reyes was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Police first filed a report on Reyes on Nov. 3, 2023. Reyes worked part-time with Central Park School for Children (CPSC) in Durham and was involved in an after-school program during the 2022-2023 school year.

Biana Starner has two kids who go to the public charter school.

"You don’t know going into the school what’s going on but i was honestly really shocked at first at what we were dealing with but i’m really proud with how the school handled it," Starner said.

Reyes, 20, has been charged with:

  • Indecent liberties with a student
  • Sexual battery
  • Assault on a child under 12
  • Misdemeanor child abuse

A letter was sent to CPSC families as the news circulated.

"The employee in question was removed from campus pending the completion of the Durham police investigation," said executive director Arlie Harris. "That investigation is now complete, and we now understand that the employee has been arrested and charged in connection with these events. His employment has been terminated."

The school said Reyes was terminated when leaders learned about the allegations in November.

"It’s important for parents and caregivers to be in ongoing conversations with their children," Cristin Deronja, Executive Director Of Safechild said.

Deronja says she wants *kids to feel safe speaking up and wants *parents to know their child’s warning signs.

"Whether it’s they don’t want to go to a place that they enjoy going, or they don’t want to be around a person, or they seem to be wanting to spend an extraordinary time around someone," Deronja said.

She also says parents should know the school’s supervision policies.

Reyes was booked in the Wake County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Investigator K. Williams at (919) 560-4440 ext. 29330 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
