Man tied to deadly December crash in Raleigh dies after medical emergency at Wake Detention Center
An inmate at the Wake County Detention Center died on Sunday after suffering a medical emergency.
According to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, 65-year-old William David Barber suffered a medical emergency early on Jan. 9. Detention officers and medical staff rendered first aid and called for EMS, which took Barber to the hospital.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating and the cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Barber tied to deadly Raleigh crash
Authorities said Barber was in custody for a car crash on December 28, which put him in the hospital.
According to his arrest warrant, Barber stole a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck before crashing it into another vehicle on South Blount Street near East Cabarrus Street.
Authorities said he was traveling over 80 mph when he crashed and charged him two counts of felony involuntary manslaughter, along with felony larceny of motor vehicle
Authorities took Barber into custody on Jan. 3 after he was released from the hospital and placed him under medical observation.
