Lance Gordon, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Angela Lee, 47, the Holly Springs Police Department announced on Monday.

On Friday just prior to 4 p.m., Gordon was stopped by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in Edgecombe County for speeding.

Gordon was driving a vehicle owned by Lee, whom he said was an acquaintance.

After troopers took Gordon into custody, they reached out to Holly Springs police to find Lee and ask if she knew Gordon had her vehicle.

The police department was unsuccessful in attempts to make contact with Lee on Friday night and again on Saturday, raising their suspicions about her safety. Holly Springs police obtained search warrants for Lee's Holly Springs home as well as her vehicle, which was still in Edgecombe County.

Investigators discovered Lee's remains in the trunk of her vehicle, and they charged Gordon with her murder as well as the theft of the vehicle.

The department continues to conduct further investigation into Lee's murder.
