A man died from a drive-by shooting at a bus stop in Durham on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Raynor Street around 3:30 p.m. in the area next to The Village Shopping Center. Evidence markers were seen in the road and caution tape surrounded the covered area at the bus stop.

Police confirmed shots were fired from a passing vehicle.

Benjamin Francois Morris, 43, of Raleigh, died from his injuries at the hospital.

A man who preferred to remain anonymous said he often catches the bus to get home from work at this stop.

"You couldn't sit at that bus stop without feeling like something was going to happen to you," said the man.

He said that after the recent drive-by shooting at this bus stop, he feels unsafe sitting there.

"There are people my age who won't go to that bus stop and wait for that bus and there are people who need to be at that bus," said the man.

A neighbor who lost his son to gun violence in 2014 said the recent shootings hit close to home. He said that every time he sees something like this happen on the news, he feels the same pain that he felt for his son.

Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews was at the scene as part of the investigating team. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and an officer in the area overheard shots being fired.

There was no description of the vehicle involved.

Someone who works at a nearby store said they heard shots being fired at one point. Additionally, the shopping center is the site of a drive-by shooting that occurred on New Year's Day outside a Subway restaurant where five people were injured.

The development comes days after a drive-by shooting Saturday morning that left a bus stop damaged on Chapel Hill Road in Durham.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Investigator D. Bussell at 919-560-4440 ext. 29254 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
