A man was shot and killed Sunday after he fired shots at Winston-Salem police officers.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers around 1:45 p.m. responded to a home in the 5000 block of Silas Creek Road, where a neighbor reported a man shot at his car.

While officers were speaking with the neighbor, William Michael Fulk, 66, exited his home with a long gun then went back inside.

Officers took cover and began giving verbal demands to Fulk, who came back outside began shooting in the direction of the officers, according to police.

One officer returned fire, striking Fulk.

Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene, Fulk died from his injuries. No officers were shot.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will independently investigate the incident.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
