A 61-year-old-man died Sunday while surfing with his son at the Buckhorn Reservoir in Wilson County.

Around 6:10 p.m., a father and son were riding a hydrofoil board on the reservoir.

Ralph Evans fell off the hydrofoil board and his son stopped the boat and pulled the tow rope in.

Evans' son could see his dad swimming to the hydrofoil board, but as his son got closer, he found his father unresponsive floating face down. The son jumped into the water and turned Evans over. While he was doing this, the current took his boat away from them.

The son yelled for help and eventually flagged down another boater who came to their aid.

They called 911 and took Evans to a boat ramp nearby.

EMS arrived and tried to save Evans. He was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no obvious signs of trauma from the board or another boat.

The cause of death is not known at this time.
