Daniel Green, convicted of killing Michael Jordan's father, fired his longtime attorney

Daniel Green, the man convicted of murdering Michael Jordan’s father in 1993, is asking a judge to file charges against the person who testified that Green murdered James Jordan.

Green has always denied that he killed Jordan or had any involvement in the murder. He is seeking criminal charges against Larry Demery for perjury.

Demery is the state’s only witness who testified that Green murdered James Jordan. Green says Demery lied on the stand to avoid getting the death penalty.

Green is also seeking charges against Demery’s attorney, Hugh Rogers. Green accuses Rogers of unlawfully urging his client to commit perjury by notarizing a statement from Demery that he knew was false.

Rogers was not aware of the filing until he received it from WRAL News.

"Based on the law and facts, I do not believe that any comment is justified," Rogers wrote in an email to WRAL News.

Green filed the request with North Carolina Superior Court Judge Winston Gilchrist who has been presiding over the case in recent years. Gilchrist presided over Green’s hearing in October where Green requested an evidentiary hearing — a step that could lead to a new trial. During the October hearing Green fired his longtime attorney, Chris Mumma, and is now representing himself. Gilchrist has not yet ruled on the October motion.

WRAL reporter Amanda Lamb spoke with Green on Tuesday from the Tabor Correctional Institution. He said at this stage in the case, he feels like he has no choice but to hold Demery responsible for what he believes is false testimony from Demery that led to his conviction.

“When our courts are transformed into crime scenes by witnesses who commit perjury under oath and boast about it from the witness stand, every state employee who witnesses this mockery of justice is oath-bound to press charges then and there,” Green said. “This was not done in my case.”

Demery pleaded guilty under a deal with the state in return for his testimony against Green. He is still in prison serving a life sentence for his involvement in Jordan’s murder. He was granted parole, but that offer was later rescinded by the prison system.

WRAL News reached out to Gilchrist’s office to see if he had received the filing but have not heard back.

WRAL's podcast series, Follow the Truth, is about the murder of James Jordan and the case against Daniel Green.
