Major overnight closures prompt detours on I-40 and US 70 near Clayton

Portions of Interstate 40 West between Wake and Johnson counties will be closed this week for the Complete 540 project, which will eventually connect Interstate 40 with the future N.C. 540 near U.S. Highway 70.

Major overnight closures to impact Johnston County drivers

Portions of Interstate 40 West between Wake and Johnson counties will be closed this week for the Complete 540 project, which will eventually connect Interstate 40 with the future N.C. 540 near U.S. Highway 70.

Crews were scheduled to complete bridge demolition and ramp realignment work last week, but rain postponed the construction.

Beginning Wednesday at 10 p.m., I-40 W will be closed at N.C. Highway 42 (Exit 312). It will reopen Wednesday at 5 a.m.

Until then, drivers can expect a signed detour using N.C. 42 and the Clayton Bypass (U.S. 70 W).

Thursday and Sunday nights, I-40 East will close at the Clayton Bypass between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

I-40 eastbound will be closed.

The detour will include the Clayton Bypass (U.S. 70 E) to N.C. 42.

Westbound U.S. 70 will close at N.C. 42 (Exit 320) from 10 p.m. Friday through noon Sunday.

Drivers on U.S. 70 W can use N.C. 42 to get back to I-40 West.

Drivers were asked to use caution in the work zones and allow extra time.
