A longtime officer is on paid administrative leave as the Smithfield Police Department conducts an internal investigation.

Ronald Johnson is a 17-year veteran of the department. Johnson’s suspension leaves the department with five detectives.

Police Chief Keith Powell did not go into detail about what prompted the investigation, citing personnel matters. On Tuesday, the department put Johnson on leave.

Johnson is also on the Johnston County Board of Education, where he has served since 2016. His term is due to end in 2024.

Johnston County Board of Education Chair Todd Sutton told WRAL News that the board "does not have the authority to suspend or remove Mr. Johnson."

Several years ago, Johnson accused school leaders of engaging in corrupt behavior as well as financial misdeeds.

"How did we go from being $5 million short in one month to $16 million?” Johnson said at the time.

Smithfield Mayor Andy Moore also weighed in.

“We investigate all personnel matters thoroughly and as quickly as possible,” Moore wrote. “When matters are brought to our attention, we act promptly and take appropriate action; however, the town must allow time for an employee to prepare a response.”

WRAL News did not hear from Johnson after calling, emailing and going to his home.

At the Johnston County Courthouse, WRAL News found Johnson filed a complaint, accusing a woman of stalking him. However, he dropped the complaint a week later.
