Technology has advanced every industry, from the culinary arts to filmmaking. One area where advancements have made a marked change is in medicine, which includes the fields of dentistry and orthodontics.

"Similar to innovation within other healthcare professions, these new technologies [in dentistry] will have a huge impact on how dental professionals treat their patients and how people take care of their oral health at home," wrote Brittany Waddell for the American Dental Association.

Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics in Cary is a leader when it comes to the latest orthodontic industry technology, employing things like 3D radiograph mapping of the skulls (X-rays), 3D printing and digital scanning.

"We use state-of-the-art, advanced technology. For example, we are able to take digital impressions with our iTero scanner so you don't have to endure uncomfortable, traditional putty impressions," said Dr. Chris Baker, an American Board of Orthodontics certified orthodontist. "This has revolutionized the process of taking impressions of a patient's teeth and bite. We use the scans to show patients their treatment options, create customized treatment plans and increase efficiency."

Their iCat 3D X-ray takes a 3D image that reveals views of teeth, roots, sinuses and tooth position in relation to other teeth. This 3D X-ray provides a quicker full scan of the head than traditional two-dimensional imaging, giving the doctors a "better visualization of the hard and soft tissues of the craniofacial structures from several perspectives" that help inform a holistic treatment plan.

Along with advanced software like the iTero and iCat, Bovenizer and Baker also employ advanced treatments, such as Temporary Anchorage Devices. These small, titanium screw-like dental implants are placed at a fixed point on the teeth to provide anchorage and aid in the teeth's alignment.

Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics is nationally recognized as a Platinum Plus Invisalign Provider, meaning it's one of the top practices in the U.S. to provide Invisalign treatments and also serves as an education site for other orthodontic practices to visit through the Damon Mentor Program.

The Damon Mentor Program teaches orthodontists how to use the Damon Braces System. The Damon System differs from conventional braces in that it uses "a gentle force designed to protect the health of your teeth and gums while in treatment." Studies have shown this system results in a broader smile with a wider arch.

The practice is one of only two orthodontists in North Carolina who are part of the Damon Mentor Program, which allows orthodontists from the Southeast to visit the office and shadow to learn about state-of-the-art technology and techniques regarding the Damon System.

The Damon System Brackets do not use ties or elastics. Instead, they are self-ligating, utilizing a metal door that closes and holds the wire in the bracket slot. They are designed to be easy to keep clean since they do not have the elastic ties/rings which attract and collect plaque and bacteria. The Damon brackets use a slide mechanism to hold the wire, which allows teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably.

Bovenizer also lectures nationally on the Damon System and regularly meets with top clinicians from around the world to discuss product research and development.

"Other orthodontists come to observe our technology and practice," said Bovenizer, who is also Board Certified. "It's really gratifying to be able to teach others about the technology that has helped take our practice to the next level and provide our patients with the best care out there."
