Local food banks brave severe weather to serve community

When preparing for a winter storm - there are many things that cross your mind - including if you and your family have enough food. And for those less fortunate even more so. But that’s where food banks and food delivery services come in.

Much of central North Carolina saw snow and ice over the weekend - meaning a lot of people were stuck at home - Some wondering where their next meal would come from.

Jennifer Caslin with The Food Bank of Eastern and Central NC said she noticed they were giving out more food than usual last week.

"At least in this last week we’ve seen an uptick," said Caslin. "The need was already there, but I’ve definitely heard we’ve had more inquiries this week."

Inquiries from different agencies that work hard to make sure that people have food on the table.

”Before winter weather like this we would let our agencies know ahead of time and say 'we know this winter weather is coming please stock up ahead of time and truly truly come and get what you need'," said Caslin.

Alan Winstead with Meals on Wheels said they prepare ahead of time.

”Winter weather certainly impacts those deliveries," said Winstead.

The organization usually delivers 1400 meals a day.

When they hear of winter weather events, they will deliver non-perishable food to folks ahead of time so they can keep it as a stock pile.

”One thing that everyone can do especially during inclement weather is if you know of an older adult who might be your neighbor or you might know in other areas just check on them. Reach out," said Winstead.

Meals on Wheels partners with restaurants in the community to get food and often deliver the items in bulk.

The food bank serves 34 counties and has 800 partners including the Salvation Army and urban ministries.
