Law enforcement agencies prepare to keep peole safe on New Year's Eve

As New Year’s Eve approaches, many people are finalizing their plans for the big night.

Some residents will even head to downtown Raleigh for WRAL First Night Raleigh, but they’re not alone.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the Raleigh Police Department are preparing for the big night.

Barricades and safety measures are already in place on Fayetteville Street, part of a suite of changes law enforcement agencies are making to keep people safe, whether you’re staying in or going out.

“We’ll have two platoons, 24/7,” Lieutenant Bradley Hecox said. “We’ll get calls. We’re just hoping it’s not for something where somebody’s New Year’s is ruined.”

Lt. Hecox said too many of the calls that go out are about two things: drinking and driving, and fireworks and guns.

“Keep the firearms secured in safes,” he said.

The Raleigh Police Department isn’t releasing details on their New Year’s Eve security plans, but officers will be patrolling.

In addition to its two platoons, Lt. Hecox said crash reduction and impact teams will be on the roads as well.

“They focus on the motor vehicle laws and the highways, but they can also respond to areas if there’s high call volume or something to that effect,” he said.

All the more reason, residents say, to take an Uber, put away the guns and play it safe for the holiday.

“Better safe than sorry,” said Sarah Wallace.
