A massive landslide Saturday forced a dozen homes in California's Rolling Hills Estates to evacuate.

Some of the residents who live in the neighborhood said they felt the land shift just around 4 p.m. and evacuated shortly afterwards.

It is unclear what caused the landslide.

County supervisor Janice Hahn said the Los Angeles County Fire Department ordered the evacuations, and deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office patrolled the neighborhood until the evacuated homes were secure.

Authorities said electricity in the area was turned off Saturday and utility crews made sure no gas or power lines were disrupted.

The American Red Cross is helping to find shelter for the evacuated families.
