A lockdown was lifted Wednesday afternoon at Zebulon Middle School after a report of a weapon on campus.

The lockdown was lifted at about 2:35 p.m.

Law enforcement and Wake County Public School System security discovered a knife and an airsoft gun.

Around 1 p.m., the school had been placed on a code red lockdown due to a report of a weapon on campus.

Around 1:30 p.m., a message from the school read: "All students are safe. Our school is under Code Red lockdown while law enforcement responds to a potential threat."

During a code red lockdown, the doors to the school and all classrooms are locked, and no one is allowed to enter or exit.

The school asked parents to not attempt to pick up their children and said updates will be provided via email and the school website.

The lockdown comes two days after schools across North Carolina were the targets of false alerts and warnings, which were possibly April Fool's Day pranks.

Apex High got two threatening calls on Monday, one to the front desk and the other to the school resource officer. A code red lockdown lasted around 30 minutes, disrupting the school day, and many parents took their students home.

Staff on site at Lee County High School endured a lockdown on Monday after a report of an active shooter on campus. It was a teacher workday there and students were not present.

In the western half of the state, law enforcement searched both Kings Mountain and East Lincoln high schools Monday on similar, incorrect reports of an armed person on the school campus.
