From retail to arts to a foodie scene, downtown Durham has a reputation of having a unique, local charm. However, a new report presented by Downtown Durham, Incorporated finds that some people think it's unsafe.

That perception is one of seven concerns the report identified.

"I think this is something that all downtowns are experiencing as we're coming out of COVID," said Nicole Thompson, president and CEO of Downtown Durham, Incorporated. "Just a perception that downtown isn't as safe as it could be."

Data shows 76 crimes reported – mostly things like larcenies and vandalism – incidents within a half mile of the center of Durham over the past month.

The safety concerns, Thompson said, are less about violent crime and more about things like car break-ins and aggressive panhandling.

"It could be around the unfortunate individuals who are unhoused, and the aggressive nature of some of the panhandlers," she said, noting, "I don't that particular issue is one that is unique to Durham."

The survey was compiled from a survey of residents, business owners and visitors.

Another concern is that downtown could lose its character as it grows so rapidly – that its "unique assets and authenticity are in jeopardy."

Thompson presented the findings to City Council, and explained the problems and solution will be studied in-depth as DDI develops a downtown master plan.

Thompson acknowledges the challenges, but she is encouraged so many people took the time to work with her team and offer ways make downtown even better.

"As long as people still care, that's why Durham is so special. People care," she said.

DDI will be working with consultants on that master plan over the course of roughly the next 18 months.

In that process there will be a lot of opportunities for Durham residents to share their thoughts.
