Deputy shoots, kills man sheriff says was hiding in crawlspace with a rifle

A sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man in Iredell County on Friday during an attempt to serve felony arrest warrants.

On Sunday, new information released by Sheriff Darren Campbell said the suspect had been hiding inside a crawlspace with a rifle.

Campbell says deputies were trying to serve multiple felony warrants to the man, who was in at a home east of Statesville. After trying to coax him out, deputies searched the home. They found the man inside a hidden crawl space, holding a rifle.

That man then allegedly pointed the rifle at a deputy, who shot and killed him.

That deputy was uninjured and placed on administrative leave pending an SBI investigation.

The man's name has not been released.
