A latte love for inclusion: Discover 321 Coffee's magic

321 Coffee is more than just a coffee shop and roaster; it's a vibrant embodiment of inclusion. With welcoming locations in Raleigh, Durham and the State Farmers Market, they've set a remarkable example by employing over 50 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These incredible individuals are at the heart of 321 Coffee, roasting coffee, taking orders and crafting lattes, illustrating the power of an inclusive business model.

Inception from humble beginnings

The journey began in 2017 when Lindsay Wrege and Michael Evans, inspired by their shared vision of inclusion, founded the company. As Park Scholars during their freshman year at NC State University, they initiated 321 Coffee with nothing more than a few folding tables and a home coffee brewer, setting up shop wherever they were welcomed.

Wrege reflects on the journey, saying, "It's been incredible to witness this community flourish within our spaces. The friendships that have blossomed between our staff and the community are truly heartwarming."

Among the vibrant team at 321 Coffee, there's Emma Wissink, whose journey has spanned three 321 locations, including her pivotal role in opening the Durham branch, set to celebrate its first anniversary. She shares her pride, saying, "It makes me feel special, because I'm one of the original people to have started working at 321 Coffee shop."

Wissink reveals some exciting news, mentioning the upcoming holiday gift boxes. These special packages will include coffee beans, socks and delightful 321 swag, with proceeds contributing to the support of individuals with Down Syndrome. What's more, each box will carry a personalized handwritten note from one of the 321 Coffee baristas.

In another corner of the 321 Coffee universe, we find Shanti Manley, who enthusiastically exclaims, "I'm on the wall and the bag of beans!" Her portrait adorns the wall at the 321 Durham location and an endearing sketch of her graces the back of 321 Coffee bags, available at 321 and select grocery stores. When asked why she was featured, Manley simply points to her radiant smile and iconic hoop earrings that are captured in the sketch.

When it comes to selecting your favorite beverage, Wissink suggests the pumpkin spice chai latte. It's a harmonious blend of warm and cozy fall flavors, crafted with pumpkin sauce and an exquisite mix of chai spices. On the other hand, Manley's favorite is hot chocolate. Whether it's white chocolate or dark chocolate, she loves them all and savors a cup of hot chocolate to kickstart her day.

Inclusion is imprinted in their very DNA. The name "321 Coffee" embodies Down syndrome, a condition resulting from an individual having three copies of the 21st chromosome. They've thoughtfully integrated DNA and chromosome mapping into their branding to celebrate the uniqueness of every individual.
