Ice delays some COVID-19 testing hours, new site opens near Garner
Even as many schools and colleges announce delays and cancelations because of the potential for icy roads Monday, plenty of COVID-19 testing sites are open.
Wake County closed schools and canceled classes Monday, while Durham and Orange have shifted to remote learning. Cumberland County is delayed.
Dozens of other public schools and colleges also announced a remote learning day, delays or cancellations. Vance County is the only district in the WRAL viewing area operating on a regular schedule Monday.
"When I first arrived, I saw how long the line was," said Raleigh resident Taquan Joyner. "I thought I was going to be waiting a while, but like I said, they are moving pretty quickly."
"If COVID is going to be a thing that's going to be around and affect lives and the way we move about our communities, there should definitely be something that is quickly available to us."
Find a COVID-19 test on Monday
Even though roads will remain slick in spots, COVID-19 testing will resume across the Triangle on Monday even after the snowstorm shut down testing sites over the weekend.
A new state-operated COVID-19 testing site opened at Highland Baptist Church, located at 8524 Crowder Road near Garner.
The state's other testing sites are also operating on normal hours (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Monday, including:
- Word of God Church (open 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.)
- PNC Arena
- Five County Stadium
- WakeMed Soccer Park
Pre-registration is required at the links provided. The tests will be conducted by Mako Medical, which returns test results in 48 hours or less.
"We wanted to make sure everyone on the outskirts of Raleigh didn't have to drive all the way across Wake County to get tested," said Millard Butterworth with Mako.
Wake County Public Health's five COVID-19 testing sites have delayed opening to 10 a.m. due to the possibility of icy roads. Those sites are appointment only.
As of 5 a.m., there were still some available slots still open.
