Hunters on Sunday found human remains in Pisgah National Forest, according to the FBI.

The FBI and the Madison County Sheriff's Office are investigating after the body was found in a wooded area off Stackhouse Road in Marshall, north of Asheville.

FBI agents and deputies hiked to the area and secured the scene, which is federally-owned land.

The human remains will be sent to the FBI lab in Virginia. It is too early to know the identity of the person or their cause of death.

The U.S. Forest Service, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Walnut Fire Department assisted with the recovery operation.
