Hours-long high-speed chase and crime spree in Charlotte ends with crash

A high-speed chase that lasted roughly two hours throughout Charlotte ended in a violent crash on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect allegedly stole a Jeep, which led to a breaking and entering call that prompted a response from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, according to a WCNC report.

The chase morphed into a crime spree as the suspect stole three more vehicles during the chase that lasted around two hours. The ordeal included a carjacking after a crash near the Ballantyne Hotel. The driver, who has yet to be identified by police, drove recklessly across Mecklenburg County and eventually entered South Carolina at one point.

During the chase, the driver went as far north as Sunset Road and Interstate 77 and as far south as South Carolina Highway 160 and U.S. 321 in Lancaster County. The chase involved a head-on collision on Johnston Road at Ballantyne Commons Parkway in south Charlotte.

A male suspect was seen jumping out of the vehicle and walking over to the car he crashed into before running to a black SUV and forcing his way in through a passenger-side door. A man in a silver pickup truck rammed the suspect's SUV multiple times from behind. After another crash, the suspect was taken into custody by police.

"I was just looking out for somebody's family," the man, Abraham Nassar, told WCNC.

"This is absolutely appalling that someone would have this much disregard for the general public," said Chief of Police Johnny Jennings. "The CMPD pursuit policy prohibited us from chasing this suspect up until the point when the suspect carjacked the last vehicle, not knowing if an abduction had taken place. In these situations, police are in a no-win situation."
